I think that it is something very similar to what we knoew as hibiscus but not quite hibiscus - like the Mallows are in the UK, or the Rose of Sharon. There are over 200 species of Hibiscus plus many flowers that look very similar such as Okra, cotton and all the Mallows more…

I finally found out that this was a Stapelia - probably Stapelia gettliffei. The flower only lasted for one day - it had faded the nest time I walked by. Maybe I only caught it on it's last day.
Anyhow I found some seeds on eBay so I'm going to have a go at raising some myself. more…

Kfruit, I'll think we'll just regrow them each year - the flowers make really good cut flowers - long lasting and are still interesting even when dried out.
Skip - thanks for the comments

This isnt a Euphorbia. Euphorbia is a big family but it doesent have any carrion flowers.
These flowers are designed to attract flies. They are known as carrion flowers as they are supposed to look like rotting meat. They often have a bad smell also. The plant comes from the Stapeliad family. It is probably an Huernia.
I dont know much more…

Artichokes are only marginally hardy in the UK. You should pile some dirt over the plants in winter or use straw.

Just reading a bokk caled "Straw into Gold" about fairytales and how they relate to transformations in women' life. brilliant book - yesterday it pointed out how feamle sexualtiy is always represented as a rose.
Maybe it is down to the textures but it more likely to be due to all the different layers and the opening up of the flower. more…
