Yesterday we spent a couple of hours planting a bed of daffodils in the back way - approximately 200 bulbs (3*75 bulbs for £10 from B&Q - mixed daffodils and narcissi).
The first job was to sort them into some sort of categorisation so that all the biggest ones went inbto the middle... actually the firsy job was to take off the turf from around 3 metres of "lawn", cut out strips at the top then slice through the soil at around 2 to 3 inches below then roll into strips. Once we'd done that - then we sorted the bulbs into types.
And don't be fooled by the photo - the turf cutting was all done by me.
The main reason for planting the bed communally was that we expect Alfereti - our son - and his wife Mary to go to the US later this year - she's American so she'll be going home, he'll be moving there after three years of marriage. New jersey. Anywho - my wife wanted something in the garden communal. We didn't have any trees to hand so the daffodil bed will be theres although freddy spent most of the planing time messing about with worms and Mary was the photographer for the day so the pair of them didn't do a whole lot of planting. Nor did Arthur - their dog who will be going with them - who just didn't look impressed that we were digging up some of his sprinting space.
When you are planting a lot of bulbs it is much quicker to do it this way rather than make a hole for each of the individual bulbs although making individual holes doesn't spoil the lawn nearly as much as stripping off the turf does.
